How do you memorize the Scout Oath? Scouting has always been a part of our family. All of my boys have been in Cub Scouts and I myself am an Eagle Scout. My dad was my leader and I was a leader for my boys. One of the things that every new scout needs to know is the scout oath and the scout law. They typically need help to begin but scouts really need to memorize the Scout oath. For your scout to earn their bobcat they are required to be able to recite the Scout Oath and Laws. But the big catch is they can have help if needed.  For your older scouts, you would really like for them to have the scout oath and laws memorized. These are usually the scouts you want to lead the pack when reciting the scout oath and law. What is the Scout…

Camping at Mammoth Cave National Park Lately, our schedule hasn’t allowed us to go do much camping. I love to go hiking and camping with my son and he was recently on fall break so I took a few days off so we could go do something. He asked if we could go camping and we decided to camp at Mammoth Cave National Park. I did a little research and since it was a last-minute decision on where we were going I checked the reservation system for any open campsites. They didn’t have much but they had several that were first come first served. About Mammoth Cave National Park Mammoth Cave National Park is located near Bowling Green KY in west-central KY. It is the longest known cave system in the world. Currently, they have found 420 miles of the cave and it seems every year they are adding to…

Marriage advice to my sons This year has been busy for my family. My middle son got married in May and my oldest son just got married earlier this month. I think back to when I got married. I was young and really didn’t feel like I was ready to be married.  And honestly, I wasn’t. I hadn’t sat down and thought about what being married means. I figured it was just like dating except we were living together. Wow, was I wrong. There is a reason why divorce rates are so high. Being married isn’t easy and most people just are not ready for the time, effort, and commitment it takes to be married.  Marriage is work. Marriage is saying your sorry even though you don’t feel like you did something wrong. Marriage is bringing your partner a soda home from the store even if they didn’t ask for…

Fall backyard activities for toddlers As fall starts this weekend it looks like we will finally get cooler temperatures. My little ones love to play outside, so much so that they get upset if I tell them they can’t go outside because it’s raining or it’s too hot. But now with the cooler weather, we can stay outside longer and hopefully not have to worry about mosquitos. This also means that I have to be more creative with backyard activities. What makes a good fall backyard activity for toddlers? Any backyard activity you choose for your toddler needs to be age-appropriate. You need to make sure whatever activity you decide to go with is safe and you have removed all possible hazards. Backyard activities for toddlers should also include some sort of learning component. The good news is that most toddlers can learn something from about anything. Anytime they are…

12 tips to get through a tough breakup I would guess everyone has gone through a tough breakup. It could be a marriage, a serious relationship, or maybe even a friendship. As people grow and get older some times they grow apart. And sometimes couples realize that the only reason they got married and stayed married, was because they had kids. When trying to navigate tough breakups we go through a range of emotions. We may do things that are harmful, maybe we start drinking excessively. Or maybe we use food to comfort us through those tough times. But does any of this really help? Probably not, in fact, I would say those things can make it worse. If you start drinking excessively it can lead to alcohol abuse and may lead you to destroy more relationships that were intact. If you start eating too much you may gain additional…

What you can and cannot control as a dad As a dad, I like when I am in control. If someone wants to go somewhere I would typically want to be the person who is driving. Even if I don’t feel like driving, I prefer to be in control of the vehicle. With our kids and our families, there are a lot of things that we can control. But there are even more things it seems we cannot control. When things that are out of control affect our lives it frustrates us. And sometimes it infuriates us. But as dads, we have to lead the way for our family and understand what we can and what we cannot control. You cannot control your child’s behavior Some people might argue with me on this one. But hear me out. You can influence your child’s behavior. You can set rules and have…

Things that dads give up to make their children happy Most dads just want to see their children be happy. We sacrifice a big portion of who we are to help keep not only our kids happy, but our spouse happy.  Dads drive a minivan instead of a fancy car to make sure everyone can fit in the same vehicle. We sit down and watch a movie with our kids instead of watching the baseball game. Dads have to make tough decisions. We have to keep a delicate balance. Do the things that make us happy or do the things that will make our kids happy. I think most dads do a good job of balancing this because if they don’t it can lead to problems and eventually resentment. Here are some things dads give up to make their children happy. This might not apply to all dads because some…
